Camerata Wales l Cymru
Artistic Director: Owain Arwel Hughes CBE
Camerata Wales l Cymru was founded in 2005 by leading Welsh conductor Owain Arwel Hughes, with the core purpose of establishing a freelance orchestra of the highest international standard for the nation
Members of the orchestra include many of the leading Welsh orchestral instrumentalists, a significant number of whom are highly prominent on the London and international orchestral scene
To date, Camerata Wales l Cymru has performed in some of the country's most prestigious performance venues including St David's Hall, Cardiff; Cadogan Hall; the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank; and - at the invitation of HRH The Prince of Wales - at St James's Palace, London.
Camerata Wales l Cymru has undertaken a number of recordings with internationally renowned classical label BIS Records of Sweden. These recordings have received excellent critical acclaim and continue to amass a great deal of broadcast airtime, particularly on leading UK national independent radio station Classic FM.
In January 2014, Camerata Wales / Cymru became the recipient of a major award from the Arts Council of Wales for the orchestra's "Penblwyddi / Anniversaries" Welsh music and digital media project. The orchestra was also then named as the Official Orchestra In Residence of the University of Wales Trinity St David
Camerata Wales l Cymru is now Chamber Orchestra In Residence of Wales' national classical music festival, the Welsh Proms Cymru and, with this new relationship, looks forward to maintaining its commitment to the performance and promotion of the music of Wales, in partnership with the national festival, across the whole of the Welsh nation and beyond
